• The shape of the carnivorous island Pi reaches after months at sea
resembles Hindu god Lord Vishnu sleeping on the ocean, tying back into
the movie's religious themes as Pi practiced Hinduism, Christianity
and Islam.
• Tobey Maguire (of Spider-Man fame) was originally going to be cast
as the writer adult Pi tells his story to. Director Ang Lee thought he
was too famous and distracting to be in the role.
• Main star Suraj Sharma did not intend to audition for the role; he
had no prior acting experience and merely went in support of his
brother, but decided to take his chance.
• One of the craziest things to happen to Nick in the film is that his
hand once got stabbed by a deranged man in a Santa Claus costume.
What’s even crazier is that this man was portrayed by Peter Jackson,
director of The Lord of the Rings, in a short flashback.
• Jim Broadbent was cast as Danny upon request. He was a big fan of
the first film in the trilogy, Shaun of the Dead.
• Edgar Wright’s brother Oscar contributed to the film through the
character of Danny. His DVD collection and art portfolios were used as
Danny's.
• The character of Toph was originally meant to be an intimidating
teenage boy
with a muscular build. This was later referenced in the episode “The
Ember Island Players”.
• The antagonist Zuko was created to circumstance for the Fire Lord
waiting in
the wings. The character has been praised for having one of,
if not the best redemption arcs in fiction.
• Mako Iwamatsu, the original voice actor of Iroh, passed away after
recording
all his lines for season 2. The episode “Tales of Ba Sing Se” features
an ‘In Memoriam’ card of him.
